Your Roadmap to Tiny Living

Dream it.

Write out a list of things you absolutely can’t survive without. Then items you enjoy but often leave town without. Last, pare down items you haven’t used in a year, or longer. Hint: Start in your attic, basement, shed, or garage! Be realistic. Determine if you plan to be mobile, or set roots in a certain location, and realize that, because of zoning restrictions, it might not be in a downtown city center.

Plan it.

What are the essential things you need in your home? If you’re not big on cooking, but having a bath tub is a MUST, maybe focus more on the bathroom layout. If you know you don’t want to climb a ladder or stairs to get to sleep every night, consider a ground floor bedroom. Think of your must-haves, and keep in mind, this is a lifestyle that involves trading off unnecessary “things” for a more fulfilling life.

Build it.

Even if you’re not that handy, if you have the time, helpful friends and family, and the will to do it, consider building a THOW yourself. Call in the professionals for things like electrical wiring, welding, plumbing, etc. Use YouTube, or volunteer with builders near you to tackle your own custom build. If you want no parts of a DIY, research tiny house builders around your area. We chose a builder based on their reputation, price, and available floor plan.
